What happened to those outposts of Viking colonization in America? Why didn't they last and why were more attempts not made to try and build them up or settle new areas? The land was rich and fertile and was the perfect setting for settlers in need of food, timber, fish and other resources which America had to offer.

The answer to that question really lies in three parts - weather, Natives and lack of support from Europe. All three of these issues combined to strike down any real chance the Vikings had of forming a lasting settlement in the America's. The great Viking explosion of exploration, conquest and terror weakened just enough as it hit the shores of Newfoundland to doom it to long term failure.
